Filmmaker / Photojournalist

Michael Powers’ photojournalism and filmmaking efforts for the past 20 years have been directed increasingly to wild and remote regions engaging in expeditions with an ecological, conservation theme.

In 2005 Powers co-founded Ocean Studio, an alliance of adventure photographers, writers & filmmakers. Recent Ocean Studio projects include: the making of the film CROSSING PATAGONIA, about the first multi-sport crossing of Chilean Patagonia; sea kayaking with a group of Norwegians in Arctic Svalbard to document the impact of global warming on wildlife; & most recently a trekking expedition in Nepal to make the film AMONG THE GREAT MOUNTAINS.

With filmmakers Mark Fraser and James Fox he attended the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival in 2006 with THE GOOD FIGHT, featuring the legendary Martin Litton, who along with David Brower and others prevented further damming of the Grand Canyon.

Powers has photographed and written for publications about Antarctica, Arctic Norway, The Fiji Islands, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Papua New Guinea, the Trobriand Islands, Easter Island, the Andes and Himalayas. His stories & photographs have been published in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Sea Kayaker, Paddler, Canoe & Kayak, and other national publications. He is currently working on a book WILD IN SPIRIT, a behind-the-scenes look at the world of adventure photography & filmmaking.
